The Year of Faith Tourism Proclaimed by World Religious Travel Association

LITTLETON, Colorado (July 1, 2008) – The World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) has designated 2009 as The Year of Faith Tourism. Serving as a special time set aside for the promotion of and participation in travel by people of faith, the purpose and goal of the year-long celebrations and activities is three-fold: (1) Highlight the New Era of Faith Tourism. (2) Increase the awareness of the personal and communal benefits of Faith Tourism. (3) Contribute to the overall growth and health of the global economy, travel industry, and individual travel providers.

All sectors of society are encouraged to become actively involved in The Year of Faith Tourism including the media, governments, travel providers/suppliers, faith communities, and individuals. The official host of The Year of Faith Tourism is the World Religious Travel Association, the leading organization dedicated to the $18 billion faith-based travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.

“Never before has a time been so ripe for the promotion of and participation in Faith Tourism. Although religious travel is the historic forerunner of today’s mass tourism, only now is Faith Tourism beginning to make its presence and economic contributions known throughout society and the travel industry in a big way,” said Kevin J. Wright, WRTA president and author of The Christian Travel Planner. “Faith Tourism is a market that is currently experiencing extraordinary growth on multiple fronts and is poised to continue this trend into 2009 and beyond.”

In recent years, Faith Tourism has evolved from a niche market driven primarily by budget pilgrimages and retirees into a vast and dynamic industry comprised of all ages seeking a diverse range of quality travel experiences. Faith Tourism today comprises its own “niche” segments including pilgrimages, missionary travel, volunteer vacations, events, conferences, cruises, leisure vacations, adventure trips, retreats, camps, monastic guest-stays, attractions, and many other forms of travel. According to the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, there are 3.3 billion Christian domestic tourists each year, 250 million Christian foreign tourists, and 150 million Christian pilgrims who are “on the move.”

As 2009 is shaping up to be year of uncertainty especially within the travel industry, there has never been a more opportune or needed time for placing Faith Tourism “front and center” of society and the global travel industry. With its designation and spotlight in 2009, Faith Tourism is set to serve as an integral economic pillar and stimulus of the global and local travel economy during this special year of celebrations and activities.

The World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) has designated the following fifteen ways in which every person and sector of society and the travel industry can become involved in the promotion of and/or active participation in Faith Tourism:

1. Individuals embark on travels with their faith community and/or to any faith-related destination.
2. Individuals become group travel planners for their faith communities.
3. Faith communities launch a formal travel program (or travel ministry).
4. Faith communities host one or more group trips.
5. Religious leaders preach on travel as ministry.
6. Tourist boards and CVB’s dedicate resources towards attracting, growing, and measuring Faith Tourism.
7. Travel and hospitality providers integrate the faith market and consumer into their overall product, sales, and marketing plans/efforts.
8. The travel industry further develops and enriches Faith Tourism educational resources and business materials.
9. Tour director schools integrate faith tourism curriculum.
10. Media feature and report on stories about Faith Tourism.
11. Film and other related companies produce faith travel programs, documentaries, and series.
12. Publishers launch or expand faith travel publications including guidebooks, magazines, and other periodicals.
13. Religious bookstores and gift-stores implement Travel sections.
14. Colleges and universities undertake the study of Faith Tourism and/or offer Faith Tourism classes.
15. Religious governing bodies promote and advance the theology of Faith Tourism.

As part of its kick-off for The Year of Faith Tourism, the World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) is hosting this fall the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference in Orlando (Florida) from October 29 – November 1, 2008. Serving as the travel industry’s first-ever global tradeshow and convention dedicated to the faith tourism and hospitality industry, the event will serve as a gathering of the “Who’s Who” in this robust marketplace. Two of the keynote speakers include the Honorable Neko C. Grant, Bahamas Minister of Tourism, and Maurice Zarmati, President & CEO of Costa Cruise Lines. The selected keynote speakers reflect the growth and diversity of today’s faith tourism industry. More than 400 participants are expected at this historic and unprecedented show.

“Expo 2008 is the most important event of the year for any organization, group planner, or pastor involved in the promotion or participation of faith-based travel,” said Kevin J. Wright, WRTA president. “The World Religious Travel Expo will serve as a pivot point between the Old and New Era of faith tourism. The result will be the emergence of a new generation of leaders in faith tourism, as well the launch of many new travel ministry programs.”

The WRTA Expo will feature two venues: The International Tradeshow and The Educational Conference. The combined event will provide the first world-class forum for travel suppliers, destinations, wholesalers, agencies and church travel planners to come face-to-face, develop and find new products and services, and build long-term relationships. All market segments will be represented at the Expo, including pilgrimage, cruising, missions, leisure vacations, attractions, conferences, retreats, Christian camps, and volunteer vacations, among others. Exhibitors will include tour operators, tourist boards, cruise lines, transportation companies, airlines, travel agencies, event planning services, hotels and accommodations, missionary agencies, travel insurance companies and faith-based destinations among others.

“As a Holy Land destination that provides a one-stop location to meet all the needs of faith-based travelers – from cruising to adventure, retreats to study tours and all the segments in between – we are delighted to sponsor the WRTA Expo,” said Malia Asfour, director of the Jordan Tourism Board of North America (JTBNA), a WRTA charter member. “We look forward to working with WRTA to showcase fresh and unique travel opportunities for this dynamic and growing industry.”

The World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) already has announced two of the keynote speakers for this fall’s historic World Religious Travel Expo 2008 in Orlando, Florida: the Honorable Neko C. Grant, Bahamas Minister of Tourism, and Maurice Zarmati, President & CEO of Costa Cruise Lines. The selected keynote speakers reflect the growth and diversity of today’s faith tourism industry. The Bahamas has developed itself into a top destination for this vast and lucrative market, serving as an ideal getaway for faith-based events, meetings, cruises, missionary travel, leisure vacations, and much more. Costa Cruise Lines represents one of the newest and most popular vacation choices of today’s faith-based consumer….cruising. Today, hundreds of churches and religious organizations embark each year on cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and the Mediterranean, among other places.

The Educational Conference will provide the most comprehensive learning program ever offered on faith tourism – for both trade and group planners. Through leading industry speakers, dynamic presentations, panel discussions, interactive break-out sessions, seminars and peer networking forums, the trade participants can expand their knowledge of the opportunities in the new niche markets within faith tourism. Group planners will attend product seminars hosted by travel industry experts, while also learning how to enrich and expand their travel ministry programs.

The Expo will be hosted Oct. 29-Nov. 1, 2008 at the renowned Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. WRTA extends popular Membership & Expo savings package through June 2008

WRTA extends popular membership & expo savings package through June 2008
Special New Year/New Client promotion to continue for 30 more days

LITTLETON, Colorado (June 4, 2008) – Due to the overwhelming success of this past spring’s New Year/New Client Promotion, the World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) is extending the popular savings program through June 30, 2008. For the next month, travel agents can save substantially when they join WRTA as a member and register to attend this fall’s historic World Religious Travel Expo. With the extension, travel agents can save as much as $100 when purchasing the combo Membership/Expo package, or as much as $150 if they belong to a consortium.

“The timing of extending this very well-received promotion could not be any better. As many travel providers and agents are learning, the faith tourism market continues to remain one of the most consistent and dependable producers of revenue in this year of uncertainty,” said Kevin J. Wright, WRTA President. “By continuing the New Year/New Client savings campaign, more travel agents can now tap into the burgeoning and robust marketplace of the religious traveler.”

The extended 30-day offer applies for any agent registration made from June 1 – June 30, 2008.

With more tour operators entering or expanding their presence in the faith tourism marketplace including Trafalgar Tours, CIE Tours International, EIS-European Incoming Services, and Unitours among others, there has never been a more important or opportune time for travel agents to take advantage of religious travel market networking opportunities, education, and business resources. In addition, by joining WRTA as a member, travel agents can display the WRTA membership logo on promotional materials, signifying affiliation with the leading faith tourism organization.

By attending the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference 2008, travel agents can develop key partnerships, meet qualified prospects, find new suppliers, attend market-specific workshops and discover how to enter or expand their presence in faith tourism. The World Religious Travel Expo will be held October 29-November 1, 2008 at the Gaylord Palms Resort Hotel & Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

WRTA Taps John Severini of KDS Solutions

World Religious Travel Association Taps John Severini of KDS Solutions for WRTA Expo 2008 -- KDS Marketing, Sales, & Business Solutions to Leverage Opportunities for First-ever Faith Tourism Tradeshow

As the World Religious Travel Association prepares to host this fall the first-ever international convention dedicated to faith tourism, WRTA is tapping into one of the travel industry's top authorities and consulting firms - John Severini of KDS Solutions. The new relationship will enable WRTA to leverage its strengths in attracting travel wholesalers, agency groups, suppliers, trade organizations, and group leaders to the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference 2008. "KDS Solutions is excited to be working with WRTA and our primary focus is to leverage the huge initial demand for this fall's convention, which will enable more agents to tap into a burgeoning market to generate new customers and incremental sales. For agents and sellers of vacation travel, WRTA's Expo is a 'must attend,'" said Severini, a partner of KDS Solutions.

Littleton, CO (PRWEB) January 14, 2008 -- As the World Religious Travel Association prepares to host this fall the first-ever international convention dedicated to faith tourism, WRTA is tapping into one of the travel industry's top authorities and consulting firms - John Severini of KDS Solutions. The new relationship will enable WRTA to leverage its strengths in attracting travel wholesalers, agency groups, suppliers, trade organizations, and group leaders to the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference 2008.

The ground-breaking event could not be more timely -- the World Tourism Organization recently stated that religious tourism is responsible for 600 million trips annually. All segments of the religious travel industry are expected to participate in the Expo, including tour operators, cruise lines, tourist boards, motorcoach/transportation companies, attractions, lodging facilities, and travel insurance/health companies. Among WRTA's newly confirmed Expo partners is CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association, which will be conducting an extensive workshop program.

"The World Religious Travel Expo is a remarkable opportunity for agents and suppliers to "step out of their box" of traditional sales focus and learn innovative ways to expand their existing client base," said John Severini, a partner of KDS Solutions. "KDS Solutions is excited to be working with WRTA and our primary focus is to leverage the huge initial demand for this fall's convention, which will enable more agents to tap into a burgeoning market to generate new customers and incremental sales. For agents and sellers of vacation travel, WRTA's Expo is a 'must attend.'"

"WRTA is thrilled to bring aboard John Severini and KDS Solutions. With their expertise and relationships in the travel industry, WRTA can further capitalize on the tremendous response we are receiving from travel suppliers and sellers," said Kevin J. Wright, WRTA President. "The Expo will be a watershed opportunity for WRTA to connect and educate companies in the New Era of the $18 billion religious travel industry. John Severini's extensive involvement with agency groups and organizations will further spread the word and opportunity that exists for agents to earn quick, easy and new sales commissions by selling faith-based vacations."

As 2008 is shaping up to be a year of relative uncertainty, with rising gas prices and a declining U.S. dollar, there is one segment that the travel industry can count on - the continued explosive growth of religious tourism. In the United States alone, outbound travel for religious or pilgrimage purposes increased in 2006 by more than 36% from 575,000 travelers to 905,000 (according to the most recent statistics of the U.S. Office of Travel and Tourism Industries). Faith-based groups and organizations are also traveling more than ever before in North America, as cruise group departures are being used as fund-raisers and "congregation building" events by religious groups, churches, synagogues, and organizations.

WRTA will host the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference 2008 at the renowned Gaylord Palms Resort Hotel and Convention Center from October 29 - November 1. The WRTA Expo will feature two venues: The International Tradeshow and The Educational Conference. The combined event will provide the first world-class forum for travel suppliers, destinations, wholesalers, agencies and church travel planners to come face-to-face, develop partnerships, find new products and services, generate new qualified leads and build long-term profitable relationships.

The Educational Conference will provide the most comprehensive learning program ever offered on religious tourism - for both trade and group planners. Through leading industry speakers, dynamic presentations, panel discussions, interactive break-out sessions, seminars and peer networking forums, the trade participants can expand their knowledge of the opportunities in the new niche markets within faith tourism. Participants can listen to and discuss with travel experts market trends, marketing intelligence, the latest products/services and actionable ways to exceed faith-based customer's expectations. Group planners will attend product seminars hosted by travel industry experts, while also learning how to enrich and expand their travel ministry programs.

WRTA selects New Charter Members

World Religious Travel Association Selects New Charter Members:
Jordan Tourism Board, Gaylord Hotels and MTS Travel Join Elite Travel Board; Charter Members Show Leadership, Innovation in Faith Tourism Industry

See Official Press Release at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/12/prweb576880.htm

The World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) has selected three new Charter Members -- the Jordan Tourism Board, North America; Gaylord Hotels and MTS Travel -- because of their innovation and long-term commitment to leading and cultivating the faith tourism industry. In its first 12 months, WRTA has established itself as the leading network for the religious travel industry, with an impressive list of members from around the globe. The initial gathering of WRTA members will take place Oct. 29 - Nov. 1, 2008 during the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference 2008, the first-ever tradeshow and convention for the faith tourism industry.

Littleton, Colorado (PRWEB) December 17, 2007 -- The World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) has selected three new Charter Members -- the Jordan Tourism Board, North America; Gaylord Hotels and MTS Travel -- because of their innovation and long-term commitment to leading and cultivating the faith tourism industry.

The latest members of the elite, invitation-only charter membership group join The World's Leading Cruise Lines (Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard Line, Costa Cruises and Yachts of Seabourn), The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Christian Travel Finder and Trafalgar Tours.

"MTS Travel is proud to be a charter member of The World Religious Travel Association. During our 50-year plus history, MTS Travel has focused on providing travel services to destinations of significance to those who travel for religious and relief and development reasons," said Jim Buddendorf, President of MTS Travel. "We are honored to count some of the largest churches and NGOs as our clients and look forward to working closely with WRTA in bringing religious travel into its proper perspective in the travel industry. As a retailer and wholesaler of religious travel, we realize the value of working with other specialists in this arena as well as WRTA to develop win/win/win scenarios for our customers, suppliers and fellow agents."

"WRTA has emerged at a critical time in the industry, when both consumers and the trade are re-thinking and re-shaping what constitutes a more meaningful travel experience," said Malia Asfour, Director of the Jordan Tourism Board of North America (JTBNA). "As a Holy Land destination that offers a variety of purpose-filled vacation experiences -- from pilgrimages to retreats, conferences to volun-tourism -- we are delighted to be a Charter Member of WRTA, and look forward to working with the leadership and fellow members to develop transformative vacation experiences that better meet the needs of religious travelers."

As two recent major studies report, the faith tourism industry is as robust as ever. In October the United Nations World Tourism Organization released its findings that 600 million religious trips take place globally each year. In November, Globus and Menlo Consulting Group debuted the first-ever study of the U.S. Religious Market, which estimated the religious travel market in America at 16 million people.

In response to the burgeoning growth and expansion of the religious travel industry, the World Religious Travel Association (WRTA) launched in January 2007. The organization's role is to shape, enrich and expand faith tourism while assisting companies with entering or expanding their presence in this lucrative yet largely untapped market. In its first 12 months, WRTA has established itself as the leading network for the religious travel industry, with an impressive list of members from around the globe, including leading tour operators, cruise lines, airlines, tourist boards, convention and visitor bureaus, attractions, hotels, restaurants and travel insurance/health companies, among others. WRTA also has become the voice of faith tourism, acting as a resource to major media around the globe such as The New York Times, National Geographic, El Pais (Spain's leading daily newspaper), The Times of London and The Financial Express (India).

In addition to charter members, WRTA has welcomed these Partner Members during its inaugural year: The Globus Family of brands, World Mission Tours, Switzerland Tourism, Objectix (Lufthansa Preferred Group Specialist), Going on Faith, Leisure Group Travel and Church Executive magazine.

The initial gathering of WRTA members will take place Oct. 29 - Nov. 1, 2008 during the World Religious Travel Expo & Educational Conference 2008, the first-ever tradeshow and convention for the faith tourism industry. The event will be held at the renowned Gaylord Palms Resort Hotel and Convention Center, which provides an exceptional forum for networking and exhibiting. The show will feature hundreds of travel wholesalers, suppliers, tourist boards, agencies and group travel planners from the $18 billion religious travel industry.

In addition to Charter and Partner members, current exhibitors include Collette Vacations, Allied T Pro, Grand Hotel Moderne (Lourdes, France), Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB, Pennsylvania Dutch (Lancaster County) CVB, WordSpring Discovery Center, Biltmore Estate, Religious Market Consulting Group (RMCG), Epiphany Media and Faith Travel Development & Consulting, among others.

"We are very pleased and excited to be a Charter Member of WRTA. The fine leadership of this terrific, new and much needed travel industry organization have become knowledgeable experts in this market and they are breaking ground in a market segment of the travel industry that is poised for tremendous growth," said Joe Donnelly, Director of National Sales-Travel Industry for Gaylord Hotels. "The assistance, programming and education that they will continue to provide to both the religious travel buyer and supplier will undoubtedly be a very valuable resource to all those in the travel industry."

The Educational Conference will provide the most comprehensive learning program ever offered on religious tourism -- for both trade and consumer.

Special News Announcement: Leisure Group Travel

Religious Tourism
A New Era, A Dynamic Industry

Expanded Religious Market Coverage & Opportunities for 2008
(see details below)

Two special sections featured - February & August November 15, 2007

Willowbrook, Ill...In support of the growing popularity of $18-billion global religious travel marketplace, Leisure Group Travel magazine, the leading group travel publication in North America, is making a major investment by expanding its religious travel coverage in 2008.
The magazine commissioned world-renowned religious travel expert, and founder of the World Religious Travel Association, Kevin Wright to create the most comprehensive analysis of the religious travel market to date. Mr. Wright's article, titled "Religious Tourism: A New Era, A Dynamic Industry" appears in Leisure Group Travel's 2008 Industry Forecast edition published this month. It outlines the many opportunities that are available to group tour planners, destinations and suppliers that are trying to capture their share of this burgeoning marketplace. Expanded 2008 Editorial Coverage
For 2008, Leisure Group Travel has commissioned two special supplements on Religious Travel in February and August. February's edition includes coverage of the Globus Religious Travel Symposium, plus market updates on destinations and events prevalent in the religious travel industry. In August, Leisure Group Travel will feature pre-show coverage of the inaugural World Religious Travel Expo, to be held in Orlando, October 2008.
Though the magazine's religious editorial coverage is expanding, Leisure Group Travel is not a newcomer to the religious travel market. Jeff Gayduk, publisher of Leisure Group Travel explains, "Back in 2003, we started to see a noticeable up-tick in the number of churches and religious organizations that were running group travel programs. We set out a plan to identify these organizations offered them a subscription. Through that effort, we were able to amass more than 3,000 religious-oriented travel groups to Leisure Group Travel's nationwide subscription base. Add that to our existing tour operators, travel agents and bus companies that serve the religious market, and we have more qualified circulation than any market competitor."
Gayduk adds that even though the word "religious" doesn't appear on the firm's masthead, that doesn't mean the magazine isn't of appeal to religious groups. "As our studies show, and Mr. Wright articulated in his article, religious groups are running the same type of group trips and retreats that other market sectors do. Whereas in years past, churches ran travel pilgrimages to validate faith, now they are developing travel programs as a social outlet, a way to tie members closer together." Gayduk continued, "Our readers from the religious segment find our articles beneficial, knowing that they may take extra time to explore their faith while on tour or retreat."
Suppliers looking to reach religious group travel planners can see for themselves how exposure in Leisure Group Travel will directly connect them with religious groups from coast-to-coast - making this religious group marketing vehicle the best value for their advertising dollar. Special two-insertion package rates have been established for the religious travel supplements in February and August, with rates from $1,550.

Jordan Travel Mart - For Suppliers & Buyers
Strengthen your portfolio and INCREASE YOUR SHARE of
Holy Land travel to Jordan.

(McLean, VA and Jacksonville, FL) The Jordan Tourism Board North America (JTBNA), a WRTA charter member, has announced that its 1st Annual Jordan Travel Mart (JTM) will be held on February 10-12, 2008 at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center at the Dead Sea. The format of JTM will include two days of pre-scheduled appointments between USA, Canada, and Latin/South America "Buyers" and Jordan "Suppliers," presentations on various tourism products, and a great selection of exciting pre and post tours throughout the entire country.

Jordan is a distinctive destination offering breathtaking and mysterious sights, luxury accommodations, exquisite cuisine and countless activities that can provide visitors with inspiration, motivation, rejuvenation, and a guaranteed experience of a lifetime. Jordan attracts many niche markets - luxury; eco-adventure; educational/cultural; medical/spa; cruising; and, of course, religious travel.
Faith tourism from North America to Jordan has increased dramatically since 2000, when JTBNA initiated a long-term marketing and public relations strategy to educate and attract the North American religious market. Years in the making, the Jordan Travel Mart will serve as a catalyst for suppliers and buyers seeking to strengthen their portfolios and increase their share of Holy Land travel to Jordan.
In making the Jordan Travel Mart announcement, Malia Asfour, Jordan Tourism Board North America Director, said: "This is a tremendous opportunity for travel professionals to learn and become experts on all the wonders Jordan has to offer and truly experience the diversity of this unique destination. We have witnessed a significant increase in interest from the North/South American travelers and have been working closely with the trade to capitalize on this trend. I am sure that Petra winning the title as one of the New 7 Wonders, will also dramatically increase consumers awareness and tourism arrivals to Jordan."
Irma Coleman, President & CEO of William H. Coleman, Inc., the Jordan Travel Mart Event Management Firm, said: "We are very excited about being a part of the Jordan Tourism Board's Team, and for the opportunity to help make this Event a vital part of Jordan's Tourism development activities in 2008, and years to come."

Globus Releases First-Ever Study of
International Religious Travelers

One of the world's leading escorted travel companies, Globus, unveiled today the findings of the first-ever study about the U.S. market for international religious vacations (conducted by Menlo Consulting Group).

Among the top statistics include:
• Total market of past and potential religious travelers in the U.S. numbers approximately 16.6 million people.
• One-third of all international travelers (or 15.7 million U.S. adults) are likely to take a religious vacation in the future
• One in 10 international pleasure travelers have already been abroad on a faith-based vacation (or approximately 4.5 million people).
• 42% of potential religious travelers want a 50/50 mix of religious and non-religious activities planned for the itinerary.
• More than 40 percent of all American international pleasure travelers (or 20.1 million people) have at least some desire to get in touch with their religious heritage when they travel.
• 80% of past religious travelers plan to repeat the experience in the future
• Three-quarters of potential religious travelers would opt for an escorted group tour versus independent or other travel.
The study also states that the "results of this survey fall closely in line with the phenomenon Globus has experienced since introducing a religious travel division (www.globusfaith.com) in 2004. In 2007, year-to-date bookings have increased almost 75% over 2006 figures."

Christian tours to Ethiopia
Hosted by Group IST
Ethiopia is beginning to attract attention as a popular Christian travel destination. Considered one of the oldest Christian countries, Ethiopia is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a number of ancient Christian churches and monasteries. Today Britons, Americans, and Chinese represent the largest number of Christian pilgrims and visitors. As tourism currently represents just 2.5 percent of the country's gross national product, the Minister of Culture and Tourism Mahmoud Dirir himself recently stated, "What we're witnessing is a revitalization of the tourism sector in Ethiopia."
Ethiopia seeks to increase its annual 250,000 foreign visitors and travelers to one million by 2010. Religious tourism is figuring heavily into reaching this lofty goal, especially as faith plays a prominent role in the life of many Ethiopians. Among the most visited Christian sites include the World Heritage Site and "8th Wonder of the World" of Lalibela's eleven stone -hewn churches, built in the twelfth and thirteen centuries. Another top highlight is St. Mary of Zion Church, considered the original resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. The Ethiopian monasteries also serve as a top attraction including Debre Libanos Monastery, Debre Estifanos Monestary, and Qusquam Monastery among others. With the current rising trend and interest in Christian Ethiopian pilgrimages, it will not be long before many travel companies offer this destination and tour.

WRTA Member Group IST is one of the few international tour operators offering Christian tours to Ethiopia. To learn more about Group IST's Christian Ethiopian tours visit www.groupist.com - or visit any of the organization's brands websites including

World famous Fatima shrine in Portugal unveils
new 9,000 seat church
More than a quarter of a million pilgrims recently celebrated the unveiling of a new mega-church at Fatima shrine in Portugal. The event took place on October 13, the 90th anniversary of the Virgin Mary appearing to three shepherd children. The new Church of the Holy Trinity is considered one of the world's largest churches with a seating capacity of 9,000 - making it almost three times the size of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, which seats approximately 2,500.
All told, more than five million people visit the shrine each year, making it one of the most celebrated Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world. Pope John Paul II himself credited Our Lady of Fatima as protecting him from the assassination attempt on his life in 1981. The bullet that lodged in the late pontiff today lies in the crown of the Virgin Mary statue at Fatima. With the new church featuring thirteen bronze entrances and nearly 50 confessional booths and a café for worshippers, Fatima is poised to remain one of the most visited shrines in the world for Catholic travelers and groups.

Missionaries must protect their travel health
(and all travelers too!)
There were nearly 300,000,000 faith-based travelers worldwide in 2005. The numbers are staggering and continue to grow. Travel Medicine is its very own field of practice and study and the importance of being properly prepared medically before leaving your home country is vital to completion of your mission. It is nearly impossible for your personal doctor to keep abreast of developments in this dynamic field. Therefore, they usually will refer you to a travel medicine expert or travel clinic. The travel expert will make some recommendations based upon, among others, the following criteria:

 Your immunization history
 Your destination
 Length of stay and accommodations
 Age and medical history

Religious travel sends millions of people to some of the most remote and under-developed areas on the globe. Indeed, there is a huge difference between sojourning to Germany and going into the Zambian bush country. This is the first article in a series of short, educational travel health additions to the monthly newsletter. You will be informed, one-by-one, of the most dangerous diseases to which you, as a missionary, may be exposed and informed about how to avoid them.

Who to contact/recommend for travel health providers?
North American travel companies and group planners can contact/recommend Passport Health at www.passporthealthusa.com.

For international travel companies and group planners, contact a reputable travel health provider in your country and develop a close partnership. For more information also visit www.who.int or www.who.org.

Air Ambulance Card membership provides worldwide air ambulance transportation, medical evacuation and repatriation services to transfer members back to the hospital of their choice. Air Ambulance Card is not insurance. Our membership program is not limited by complex language, restrictions and conditions included in standard travel insurance policies.
